Agribusiness Association of Iowa/ Iowa Nutrient Research & Education Council
Shawn Richmond is the Director of Environmental Services at the Agribusiness Association of Iowa (AAI) where he coordinates environmental programs and services. Shawn also serves as the director of environmental technology for the Iowa Nutrient Research & Education Council (INREC) on projects including environmental progress measurement, technology development, and associated outreach and education efforts.
He started at AAI in April 2015, and prior to that worked as a senior environmental specialist at the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) for 13 years and worked at Iowa State University as an environmental scientist for 6 years prior to that. His work at IDALS included managing the Iowa Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, as well as work on the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy, and Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force. He has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and a master’s degree in Water Resources, both from Iowa State University.
The Iowa Nutrient Research & Education Council partnered with Iowa State University to successfully develop and implement a statistically representative survey to measure the adoption level of in-field nutrient stewardship practices across Iowa. The survey provides highly accurate information on practice adoption levels and will be utilized to calculate nutrient load reductions based upon the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy Science Assessment, thereby enabling progress reporting on the current status of practice adoption levels as compared to the baseline period of 1980-1996. This survey is the official method for measuring, documenting and quantifying progress under the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. This session will provide an overview of the survey method and results from the 2017 crop year.
